Day 19: Fortune & Glory
"Fortune and glory kid, fortune and glory." There's something about when Harrison Ford saying that line in "Temple of Doom." My mind immediately thinks of a life full of adventure. Can we truly find adventure in a cocktail, and how can we find adventure when we can't leave our homes? Welcome to day 19 everyone, and it certainly hasn't become any easier. I'm at that point where I'm having trouble with a sense of purpose, but it's not like I can go anywhere or do anything. I guess the best way to find adventure is to get lost in some films. Does anyone else relate to Indiana Jones this much?
In Temple of Doom, we first find our hero in 1930s China in the middle of a face-off with a local crime boss. After narrowly escaping Shanghai, Jones and his two companions find themselves in northern India, when a village takes them to be saviors sent by Shiva to help them. Unable to say no to the possibility of fortune and glory, they three of them travel to Pankot Palace to reclaim the village's sacred stone. The entire ordeal just makes me think of where we are now. Do we rise up to the challenges before us, or do we let our own fortune and glory slip away. Is this that moment where we let this beat us, or do we rise above?
Fortune & Glory
1oz Scotch Blend (I did a blend of 10 parts Dewars to 1 part Lagavulin 16. This is all personal preference, but I suggest not overdoing the Islay portion, as it will dominate the entire drink.)
.5oz 151 Proof Guyanese Rum (I used Hamilton 151)
.5oz Black Pepper Tarragon Syrup
.5oz Lemon
1oz Coconut Cream
5 dashes Angostura Bitters
Collins Glass
Whip shake and pour unstrained.
Top with crushed ice.
Garnish with pineapple fronds, fresh ground black pepper, and additional dashes of Angostura for aroma.
Black Pepper Tarragon Syrup
1.5oz (by weight) Black Peppercorns
1oz Tarragon
1 Quart water
White Sugar
In medium saucepan, lightly toast peppercorns then add water.
Bring to a boil, then simmer until the pepper flavor is fully incorporated.
Remove from heat, then add tarragon.
Allow to steep for 15 minutes, then strain.
Combine pepper and tarragon tea with equal parts of sugar.
Stir until sugar is fully dissolved.
"You're gonna get killed chasing after your damn fortune and glory!" Maybe so Willie, but at least it won't be boring. For when you can't chase adventure, it's always good to have a drink that tastes like adventure. Let yourself get lost with this one. If you can't get your hands on tarragon, the cocktail still works great with just the pepper syrup, but here are no rules during quarantiki after all. I'll be back tomorrow with another tasty treat for those in need. Enjoy the adventure, and keep shaking.
We are watching Temple of Doom right now. Kali Ma!!
