Day 26: In the Gale
Hope, it's a word I think we can all relate to on a much higher level these days. It's amazing how much hope we are capable of having, and today I'm thankful for that. Welcome to day 26 which means our 26th cocktail. I'm beginning to see a lot of people become unraveled with the state of things, but I'm reminded of the hope we all possess inside. In times of uncertainty, it's too easy to let the worst situations come to mind. There's a poem by Emily Dickinson I've been remembering a lot lately, and it's called "Hope" Is The Thing With Feathers.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
In the Gale
1.25oz Santa Teresa 1796
.75oz Rum Fire Overproof
.75oz Orgeat
.5oz Falernum
.5oz Passion Fruit Syrup
1oz Lime
4 drops Ube Extract
Double Old Fashioned or Mai Tai glass.
Whip shake and pour unstrained.
Top with crushed ice.
Garnish with mint sprigs, lime hull, flower, and parasol.
*note* I would advise putting your ube extract in a dropper bottle and being very careful not to let it touch your hands. It will stain them purple.
I think perhaps what the poet was trying to tell us, is there's a bird called "Hope" inside all of us. I thought maybe a poem would be a bit of a change from the usual stories behind these drinks. Some of us have been feeling like we've been caught up in this strong gale of chaos, which doesn't want to stop. I'm holding out hope, and I hope you are as well. I think we can all get through this together, but what do I know, I'm just a tiki bartender. I'll see you all tomorrow. Keep shaking, my friends.
